Finding the right fabric - De juiste stof vinden

Some people seem to always choose the right fabrics for their blocks and quilts. They have impeccable taste and make amazing fabric and colour combinations, resulting in stunning quilts. I am not one of those people. Selecting a fabric can take me hours of hesitating, trying, cutting, sewing, undoing, cutting again, sewing again, undoing again. When I see a beautiful block or quilt I'm always relieved if I recognise a fabric that I have in my stash. One more less fabric to choose!

The last block of the Green tea and Sweet Beans I made, presented me once again with the problem of finding the right fabric. This is the block I've made:

But it's not finished yet, it needs one more round, one more fabric. And I just can't find the right one. So I took half of my stash out and took pictures of the block on top of each fabric. Then I made a mosaic with all the pictures. And then a mosaic with my favourite choices.

Taking the pictures and making the mosaic was the easy part. But now for the difficult part: choosing! Aargh! I think I'll sleep on it one more night. Or two.

Of twee.

  1. You didn't ask for opinions but here is mine: the three pictures on the left are the best choices with the middle one being best. The bottom most is good if you want a lower volume/more subdued block. I really like the middle left picture - the grey with red flowers makes the block come to life.

Also have you tried spinning the block so the yellow chevron is on the bottom? I think it would look good like that.

Good luck with your choice! And you do just fine choosing fabric.

    1. Hi Nicole! I think a lower volume block will fit in best with the other blocks for this quilt. I'm planning on having a good look at all the blocks this weekend, put them all on my "design wall" and then maybe even decide (wow!).

  2. I like the yellow colour in the first, and the pink floral below and actually the second one is rather nice too! Maybe see what it looks like with the other blocks?

  3. oh my goodness! I don't envy you having to choose - I am awful at making fabric decisions! My favourite is the top left for this block, but I don't know how it looks with the others. Good luck!

Succes!
