A finished quilt! - Een afgewerkte quilt

After a day of quilting and spending an evening on the couch sewing the binding on, the green baby quilt was finished. I almost can't believe I actually managed to finish it on schedule, i.e. before the end of the weekend.

Na een dag quilten en een avond op de zetel doorbrengen om de boord eraan te naaien, is de groene baby quilt afgeraakt. En bijna niet te geloven, ik ben erin geslaagd voor het einde van het weekend, zoals gepland.

I quilted on both sides of the seams, in both directions. A simple quilt pattern, easy and fast.

 De quilt werd dubbel doorgestikt naast alle naden, in beide richtingen. Een simpel quiltpatroon, makkelijk en snel. 

Now, I'm not a big fan of making a backing for a quilt. in gact, I hate making the backings and it's one of the reasons my quilts take such a long time to finish. But I'm really pleased with this one, it's probably my favourite one of all the quilts I've made. I used the birth cards to enlarge the letters of the baby's name and used them to make fabric ones. I stitched the letters to the back and really like the result.

Ik heb een hekel aan het maken van achterkanten, dat is me er er meestal net te veel aan. Een reden ook waarom mijn quilttops zolang blijven liggen tot ze afgewerkt zijn. Maar over deze achterkant ben ik heel tevreden. Ik gebruikte het geboortekaartje om de letters uit te vergroten en op stof over te nemen.  Dat stikte ik dan vast op de achterkant. Best geslaagd, vind ik zelf.

For the binding I used a striped fabric in the same colours as the quilttop.

Voor de afwerkingsboord gebruikte ik een strepenpatroon in dezelfde kleuren als de quilttop. 

Finished quilt is 88cm (35") x  114cm (45")

 

Now all there's left to do is wrap the quilt and give it to the new baby!

Nu nog netjes inpakken, en dan kan het quiltje afgegeven worden!

A green baby quilt - Een groene baby quilt

A couple of days ago, the birth card from a little baby girl arrived in the mail. Since baby girls need a baby quilt, I knew what to do this weekend. The green birth card served as inspiration for the colour of the quilt. Green would be the main colour, mixed with some blue and yellow.

Enkele dagen geleden zat er een geboortekaartje in de bus, van een kersvers meisje. Vermits kersverse meisjes kersverse dekentjes kunnen gebruiken, ging ik aan de slag. Het groene geboortekaartje diende als inspiratie voor de keuze van de stoffen. Groen werd de hoofdkleur, aangevuld met wat blauw en geel. 

I chose a super simple square pattern, always a favourite.

Ik koos voor een supereenvoudig patroon van vierkantjes, altijd leuk.

This evening or tomorrow I'll do the quilting. This quilt has to be ready by the end of the weekend.

Vanavond of morgen gebeurt het quilten. Het quiltje moet tegen het einde van het weekend af zijn.

And guess who was watching me taking the pictures?

En twee keer raden wie alles in de gaten hield tijdens de foto-sessie?

6 babyquilts

"Het Leuvens Stiksel" is the local sewing club I'm a member from. Many members are young women with heaps of talent. If they spot a problem, they immediately start working on a solution. A substantial part of these members decided to tackle a pressing problem: the ageing population. And of course no half measures were taken: after all we need babies, and quick! This commitment resulted in a babydrink voor 6 new world citizens: Bas, Briek, Nayeli, Fien, Lieselot and Mattia. 3 boys and 3 girls, those women really thought it through.

"Het Leuvens Stiksel" is de naaiclub waar ik lid van ben. Veel van de stikselleden zijn jonge, geëngageerde madammen met vele talenten. Als ze een probleem zien, pakken ze het onmiddellijk met beide handen aan. En een niet onbelangrijk deel van de stikselmadammen heeft beslist een prangend probleem aan te pakken: de vergrijzing. Natuurlijk nemen ze geen halve maatregelen: kindjes zullen er komen, zonder gedraal! Dit engagement resulteerde afgelopen maandag in een babyborrel voor niet minder dan 6 nieuwe wereldburgers: Bas, Briek, Nayeli, Fien, Lieselot en Mattia. Mooi gelijk verdeeld tussen jongens en meisjes, er werd aan alles gedacht.

Out of gratitude for the fact that these members of the sewing club are so industriously taking care of my pension (and I'm much closer to that than they are), I decided to make a quilt for each baby. Not that it was a tough choice: I can't sew clothes, I can't knit, I can't flock, I can't make stamps. It had to be a quilt. As there were only 3 weeks left to make all 6 quilts, I needed a simple pattern. I searched the internet and, as is often the case, found the ideal pattern on Flickr. This quilt had it all: beautiful, simple, original, individual. And doable in 3 weeks (at least if you have some free days to spend working on them...).

Uit dankbaarheid voor het feit dat de stikselmadammen zo ijverig voor mijn pensioen zorgen (waar ik al veel dichterbij ben dan zij), besliste ik voor elke baby een dekentje te maken. Moeilijk was die keuze niet: ik kan geen kleren kan maken, ik kan niet breien, ik kan niet flocken en ik kan geen stempeltjes maken. Het moest dus een quilt worden. Maar ik had wel een simpel patroon nodig want er waren nog maar 3 weken om alles af te krijgen. Rondzoeken op het internet dus, en zoals zo vaak kwam de redding van Flickr. Dit dekentje had het allemaal: mooi, klein, simpel, origineel, individueel. En haalbaar op 3 weken (tenminste als je een paar vakantiedagen over hebt om er aan te besteden...).

The cutting, sewing and quilting gave this result, just 12 hours before the deadline: 6 babyquilts, all the same yet all different.

Het gesnij, genaai en gequilt resulteerde 12 uur voor de deadline in 6 babydekentjes, allemaal hetzelfde maar toch allemaal verschillend.

 All 6 quilts were folded...
Ze werden alle 6 opgeplooid...

Sneak peek

When I look at my previous posts, it's as if I only  worked on the blocks for the quiltbee this month. That's not entirely true. In fact, it's not true at all. I managed to finish 3 quilts these past weeks, and more to come. I can't show them yet, but a sneak peek can't hurt, can it? More pictures later....

Het lijkt wel alsof ik de afgelopen weken enkel bezig geweest ben met de blokken voor de quiltbee, maar niets is minder waar. Niet minder dan 3 quilts heb ik al afgewerkt deze maand, en er staan er nog enkele op stapel. Jammer genoeg kan ik ze nu nog niet tonen maar een sneak peekje moet kunnen. Meer foto's volgen later...

A new quilttop

Very busy days here, with kids taking exams and lots of work at the office too. No better way to forget about all that than some straightforward sewing. And once I saw this quilt on Flickr, I knew I had found just the right project.

I figured out the measurements and decided to keep the colours über simple, just like in the original. The dots were chosen to add some playfullness. I'll quilt it quite densely with orange thread. I think it will make a fun boy's quilt.

Now I have to look for some flannel to make the back, I'm searching for a Folksy Flannel print that is just the right colour, but they are increasingly hard to find.

I found out that Amy from Diary of a quilter sells a pattern for this quilt. It's called Chain linked modern quilt pattern and her version is charm pack friendly!

I started this blog just a week ago, but have been quilting for almost 2 years now, am largely self-taught, and am immensely enjoying all the blogs and quilts on the internet. In fact, I spend way too much time behind my computer instead of behind my sewing machine, which is one of the reasons I have plenty of WIP's.

The quilt I chose is this one:

I made it in september last year for a colleague of mine, who gave birth to a little boy. Because it is a baby quilt, I didn' t want to use too much white, thinking it needed to be practical in the first place.  It's the first cross quilt I've made, and I chose blue, grey and orange (boyish colours to my mind). I used some animal prints, without them being the focal point of the quilt.

As you can see, it was quilted with simple straight lines in grey. I didn't like FMQ for this one, the pattern was already busy enough so the quilting needed to be simple.
