A blue postage stamp quilt

It has been a while that I have wanted to make a postage stamp quilt with blue fabrics. And so I selected 80+ blue fabrics (some not much bigger than scraps) to cut into 2 inch wide strips.

After cutting all the fabrics, and sewing them together, and cutting them in strips, and sewing the strips together again to make the blocks, I discovered I had not enough blocks to make a big quilt. And so I started the whole process once again: take the fabric, iron, cut, fold, put away. 80 times, two Sundays. And I had yet to start piecing.

The squares are 1.5 inch finished, the fabrics are both old and new, many Denyse Schmidt and many different others too.

 A postage quilt looks simple, and it is, but there is so much to cut and piece and cut again and piece again, there seems to be no end to it! Luckily for me, this weekend is a long one with a national holiday, so I had four whole days off from work! Those were well used to finaly piece the whole quilt.

The quilt measures 140x200cm, which means is is big enough to use on a single bed. Or as a very generous lap quilt. We'll see. Now I have to find a backing fabric (something grey I think) and start quilting.

Winding ways quilttop

After nearly two years, the winding ways quilttop is finished! The layout for this quilt had to be altered after I found there wasn't enough of the background fabric and it was impossible to find more. So I opted for a different design than I originaly had in mind, but I think it turned out ok.

Na bijna twee jaar is de winding ways quilttop eindelijk af! De layout van de quilt moest aangepast worden nadat ik ontdekte dat er niet genoeg achtergrondstof was en het bovendien onmogelijk was er nog wat van te vinden. Ik koos dus voor een ander patroon dan ik eerst in gedachten had, maar vind dat het resultaat er best mag wezen.

The quilt is made with a ruby red fat quarter pack from Oakshott. The background fabric is a Westfalen shot cotton. There's still some of the Oakshott fabrics left, enough I hope to bind the quilt with.

De quilt is gemaakt met een ruby red fat quarter pack van Oakshott. De achtergrondstof is een Westfalen shot cotton. Er is nog wat van de ruby reds over, genoeg hoop ik om de quilt er mee af te boorden.

The quilt measures 175cm x 130 cm (about 69" x 51"). Now I have to figure out how to quilt it. Maybe handquilt with perle cottton?

A finished HST quilttop - Een afgewerkte HST quilttop

Here it is: a finished quilttop! The last stems, flowers and leaves were added over the past weeks, as was the final blue border, to make this pretty big quilt (225cm x175 cm).

Hier is ie dan: een afgewerkte quilttop! De laatste stengels, bloemen en bladeren werden aangebracht in de loop van de voorbije weken, net zoals de laatste blauwe boord, om tot deze behoorlijk grote quilt te komen (225cm x175cm).

Heel, heel, heel erg leuk. 

I found the pattern in Quilts Japan Magazine (March 2012 edition) and it had been on my mind ever since.

Het patroon komt uit Quilts Japan Magazine (editie maart 2012) en het sluimerde al sinds toen in mijn achterhoofd. 

I bought a variety of black and white fabrics and the blue flower fabric over a period of a year with this project in mind. The red fabric is an American Jane pindot fabric.

Ik kocht  in de loop van het afgelopen jaar een hoop verschillende zwart en witte stoffen en de blauwe bloemenstof met dit project in gedachten. De rode stof heeft kleine witte stipjes en is van American Jane.

I have a piece of batting that I bought for another quilt, but I hope it's big enough for this one because I can't wait to start quilting.

Er ligt nog ergens een stuk vulling die ik kocht voor een andere quilt, maar ik hoop dat het groot genoeg is voor deze, want ik popel om aan het quilten te beginnen. 

A half square triangles quilt - Een quilt van driehoeken

After spending almost two months on making blocks for the Green Tea quilt, I needed something else, something easy and fast. Somewhere in my tower of WIP's there was one that wasn't too complicated, or so I hoped. I started an HST project over a year ago, after seeing a beautiful quilt in Quilts Japan (March 2012 edition). This was the perfect occasion to finish this quilttop.

Na de twee afgelopen maanden alleen maar blokken gemaakt te hebben voor de Green Tea quilt, moest ik mijn gedachten verzetten met iets makkelijk en snel. Ergens in mijn stapel onafgewerkte projecten was er eentje dat niet al te ingewikkeld was, hoopte ik toch. Meer dan een jaar geleden begon ik aan een quilt met driehoeken (half square triangles of HST) nadat ik een prachtige quilt zag in Quilts Japan van maart 2012. Dit leek me de ideale gelegenheid om deze quilttop af te werken.

And so fabrics were chosen for 165 HST blocks.

En dus werden er stoffen gekozen voor 165 HST blokken

And after that I made a layout on my state of the art design wall.

Daarna volgde een layout op mijn hypermoderne designmuur.

Sewing all the blocks and rows together took longer than I expected.

Alle blokken en rijen aan mekaar stikken nam heel wat meer tijd in beslag dan ik gedacht had.

The top was finished just in time to make some pictures outside. Although I like the cold weather in winter, I do dislike those short days!

De quilttop was gelukkig net op tijd klaar om nog foto's buiten te kunnen nemen. Alhoewel ik hou van koude winters, ben ik absoluut niet gesteld op die korte, donkere dagen!

But I'm very pleased with the result of my efforts.

Maar ik ben heel erg opgezet met het resultaat van mijn inspanningen.

There are still borders to add, and some appliqué to do. Once the top is complete, this will be about 220cm x 180cm, a very generous sized quilt.

Er moeten nog boorden aan de top, en zelfs nog wat appliqué. Eenmaal de top af is, zal hij ongeveer 220cm x 180cm groot zijn, echt wel niet klein dus.

Red and White quilt (Part IV)

Some days ago, the fabric needed to make the border for the red and white quilt arrived in my mailbox (I previously wrote about this quilt here, here and here). I had to find it on the internet because it was sold out in the shop where I bought a piece earlier. But after some searching I found it online and so was able to finish this quilt.

Een paar dagen geleden kwam de stof die ik bestelde voor de rand van de rood en witte quilt aan (vroegere blogposts over deze quilt vind je hier, hier en hier). Ik moest ernaar zoeken op het internet want in de winkel waar ik eerder een stuk kocht, was het uitverkocht. Gelukkig vond ik het nog online en kon zo de quilt afwerken.

I used the lighter red fabric for the border, but added some red flower fabric in the middle and on the corners to complete the square pattern.

Ik gebruikte de lichtere rode stof voor de boord, maar bracht toch nog enkele stukken rode bloemenstof aan in het midden en aan de randen om het patroon van het vierkant te benadrukken.

It finished at a generous 200cm x 200cm (79" x 79"). I did intend to hand quilt it but am doubting that now because of the size of the quilt. Maybe I should send it to a professional quilter instead? We'll see, I'll think about it.

De afmeting is 200cm x 200cm. Eigenlijk was ik van plan deze quilt met de hand te quilten, maar nu twijfel ik omwille van de grootte van de quilt. Misschien zou het beter zijn een professionele quilter in te schakelen? Ik zie wel, ik zal er nog een paar nachtjes over slapen.

Red and White (part III) - Rood en Wit (deel III)

It took longer than I thought but the red and white quilttop is almost finished.

Het heeft langer geduurd dan gedacht, maar vandaag was het dan zover: de rood en witte quilttop nadert zijn voltooiing.

Almost, because originally I wanted to add an extra border, as you can see on my pattern. I tried on one side, using the flower fabrics, but wasn't crazy about it. I'll give it another try with the other red fabric, but I only have a couple of inches left of that, so I'll have to go to the shop first. And I don't know when I'll be able to do that.

Nadert, want eigenlijk was ik van plan om er nog een boord aan toe te voegen, zoals hier op de tekening. Ik heb het aan één kant geprobeerd met de rode bloemenstof, en dat viel wat tegen. Ik ga het nog eens proberen met de andere rode stof, maar daarvoor moet ik eerst in de winkel geraken. En wanneer dat zal lukken, dat weet ik niet.

And besides, is a second border really necessary?  As you can see, I already added a first "border", continuing the block pattern. And the quilttop is already quite large (66" x 66") and the extra border would mean an extra 12".

En is het wel nodig, die tweede boord? Zoals je kan zien heb ik de tekening van de blokken al verlengd in een eerste "boord", waarbij het blokpatroon verlengd werd. En de quilttop is ook nu in elk geval al behoorlijk groot (175 cm x 175 cm) en die extra boord zou nog eens 30 cm erbij betekenen.

This is a picture of the cover of the book where I found the Japanese blocks. Idon't know if it's still for sale in shops, but I'm pretty sure you can find used copies on the internet.

Ter info nog even een foto van het boek waar ik de Japanse blokken uit haalde. Ik weet niet of het nog in de winkel verkrijgbaar is, maar tweedehands op het internet zeker wel.

It's my intention to quilt this top extensively and I even bought a book with that in mind: Infinite Feathers by Anita Shackelford. I also bought her quilting template. A bunch of over the top feathers, I think it'll look great on this quilt.

Het is de bedoeling de rood en witte quilt uitgebreid te quilten, en daarvoor heb ik zelfs speciaal een boek gekocht: Infinite Feathers van Anita Shackelford. Ik kocht ook de bijhorende quilting template. Allemaal uitbundige veren op deze quilt, ik zie het al helemaal voor me.

But all that is not for the immediate future. The next couple of weeks will be spent finishing the new vintage quilt, so that means no sewing and lots of quilting. 

Maar dat is allemaal toekomstmuziek. De volgende weken ben ik van plan de nieuwe vintage quilt af te werken, dat wordt dus weinig stikken en veel quilten.

A value quilt - Een value quilt

A new project is normally a lot of fun, but I was unsure about this one. Not in the beginning, but after seeing all the HST's on my design wall, I hesitated. Did it look ok? Would it be worth while to continue or should I just move on to a next project (or better still: finish one of the old ones). But I did finish this quilt top after all. My first value quilt, made from old shirts. Still not madly in love with it, but maybe it'll grow on me.

Een nieuw project is normaal gezien een garantie voor plezier, maar ik was wat onzeker over het deze. Niet helemaal in het begin, maar eenmaal ik al de driehoeken op mijn muur zag, begin de twijfel te knagen. Ziet het er wel ok uit? Zou het de moeite zijn om verder te doen of beter onmiddellijk overstappen naar een volgend project (of nog beter: één van de oude projecten afwerken). Maar de top geraakte toch af. Mijn eerste "value" quilt (hoe heet zoiets in het Nederlands?), gemaakt van oude herenhemden. Nog altijd niet helemaal overtuigd, maar misschien komt dat wel na een tijdje.

All HST were squared up to 4 1/4" before sewing them together. A time consuming method, but it makes accurate piecing so much easier.

Alle HSt's werden bijgesneden tot 4 1/4" voor het samenstikken. Een methode die behoorlijk tijdsintensief is, maar garant staat voor een mooi resultaat.

As always, my cat Sokje ("Socks") was around to make sure not only the quilttop would get some attention.

Zoals altijd was mijn kat Sokje in de buurt om zeker te zijn dat niet enkel de quilltop aandacht zou krijgen.

I have already started a new project, again something completely different. My style seems to be to constantly switch between styles...

Ondertussen werd hier de eerste hand gelegd aan alweer een nieuw project, weer iets totaal verschillend. Mijn stijl bestaat er blijkbaar uit constant te wisselen tussen stijlen...

Windmills - Windmolens

Last year, while on holidays, we were in a small bookshop in a small village in Queensland. In a corner of the bookshop were magazines over a year old that hadn't sold yet. They asked 1 dollar per magazine and I bought every quilt magazine in that stack for a grand total of 5 dollars. One of the magazines was the "Australian Quilters Companion" from April 2011, and in there was the pattern "Whirly Garden" by Kate Conklin (the pattern is for sale here, on her website). I liked it immediately and looked at it repeatedly this past year but never had the time to make it. This weekend, I made time.

Vorig jaar op vakantie waren we in een klein krantenwinkeltje aanbeland in een klein stadje in Queensland. In een hoek van de winkel lagen alle oude magazines die nog niet verkocht waren geraakt, allemaal voor 1 dollar per stuk. Ik kocht alle quiltmagazines die er tussen lagen, voor het enorme bedrag van 5 dollar (toen ongeveer 5 euro). Eén van de magazines was de "Australian Quilters Companion" van april 2011 en daarin stond het patroon "Whirly garden" van Kate Conklin (het patroon wordt te koop aangeboden hier, op haar website).  Ik was dadelijk verkocht en keek er regelmatig naar het afgelopen jaar maar vond nooit de tijd om eraan te beginnen. Afgelopen weekend maakte ik tijd.

After the cutting, the sewing. Everything came together remarkably fast.

Daarna stikken. Alles ging behoorlijk snel.

And yesterday evening, the quilt was ready.  Too late to take pictures, but my husband was kind enough to hold the quilt before leaving for work this morning.

En gisteravond was de quilttop klaar! Te laat en te donker om nog foto's te kunnen maken, maar mijn wederhelft was zo lief om vanmorgen voor hij naar het werk vertrok de quilt even vast te houden.

Hmmm, maybe better to take another picture without his head and arms shining through the quilt as if he were a ghost. Never take a picture against the sunlight.

Hmmm, misschien toch beter nog een foto te nemen waar zijn armen en hoofd niet zo'n spookachtige indruk geven. Nooit tegen het licht in foto's nemen.

The border looks really nice on this quilt. I normally don't add borders to my quilts, but maybe I should do it more often. 

De boord ziet er heel leuk uit bij deze quilt. Normaal gezien werk ik mijn quilts niet af met een boord, maar misschien moet ik dat in de toekomst toch wat vaker overwegen.

The original pattern is for a square quilt, but I made this one twin-sized. It's size is about 150cm x 225 cm. This quilt is next on my list to be quilted, after the new vintage quilt I'm working on at the moment.

Het orginele patroon is voor een vierkante quilt, maar ik heb deze groot genoeg gemaakt voor een éénpersoonsbed. De maten zijn ongeveer 150cm x 225 cm. Deze quilt staat als volgende op de "te quilten-lijst", na de nieuwe vintage quilt waar ik momenteel aan werk.

A new vintage quilt - Een nieuwe vintage quilt

Some years ago I was looking around on the internet and found a picture of this vintage quilt.

Enkele jaren geleden neusde ik rond op het internet en vond ik een foto van deze vintage quilt.

 

Unfortunately, I forgot to copy the link to the original website, but I do remember that it's a quilt from the 1930's. I was really intrigued by the pattern en spent several hours deciphering it and making my own template.

Jammer genoeg noteerde ik toen niet van welke website ik de foto haalde, maar ik herinner me wel dat het een quilt was van de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw. Vooral het patroon intrigeerde me en ik spendeerde enkele uren aan het ontcijferen en het maken van een eigen template.

Followed by... nothing at all. The quilttop moved to my closet and stayed there for the past 2 years. At the beginning of 2013, I basically only had one New Years resolution: finish what you have started! I selected 4 quilttops that really deserved to be finished, and after this one and this one, the new vintage quilt is next on the list.

Gevolgd door... helemaal niets. De quilttop werd netjes in mijn kast opgeborgen en lag er twee jaar. Nu had ik bij het begin van dit jaar eigenlijk maar één goed voornemen: gij zult afmaken waar gij aan begint! Ik selecteerde vier quilttops die het echt wel verdienden afgewerkt te worden, en na deze en deze, is de nieuwe vintage quilt aan de beurt.

So last weekend, the quilt was basted, and will over the next few weeks (months?) be handquilted with perle cotton. More pictures will surely follow.

En dus werd afgelopen weekend de quilt samengebonden om de volgende weken (maanden?) met de hand gequilt te worden met coton perlé. Er zullen ongetwijfeld nog foto's volgen.

A green baby quilt - Een groene baby quilt

A couple of days ago, the birth card from a little baby girl arrived in the mail. Since baby girls need a baby quilt, I knew what to do this weekend. The green birth card served as inspiration for the colour of the quilt. Green would be the main colour, mixed with some blue and yellow.

Enkele dagen geleden zat er een geboortekaartje in de bus, van een kersvers meisje. Vermits kersverse meisjes kersverse dekentjes kunnen gebruiken, ging ik aan de slag. Het groene geboortekaartje diende als inspiratie voor de keuze van de stoffen. Groen werd de hoofdkleur, aangevuld met wat blauw en geel. 

I chose a super simple square pattern, always a favourite.

Ik koos voor een supereenvoudig patroon van vierkantjes, altijd leuk.

This evening or tomorrow I'll do the quilting. This quilt has to be ready by the end of the weekend.

Vanavond of morgen gebeurt het quilten. Het quiltje moet tegen het einde van het weekend af zijn.

En twee keer raden wie alles in de gaten hield tijdens de foto-sessie?

Basting a quilt - Een quilt rijgen

Part of yesterday was spent basting a quilt, my favourite part of making a quilt. I'm sure it's your favourite part too.

Een deel van gisteren werd doorgebracht met het rijgen van een quilt, mijn absoluut meest favoriete deel van de totstandkoming van een quilt. Ik ben er zeker van dat het ook jouw favoriete deel is.

First I tape the back of the quilt to my floor, using the tiles as guidelines to make sure it's straight. 

 Eerst plak ik de achterkant van de quilt aan de vloer met tape, waarbij ik het tegelpatroon gebruik om zeker te zijn dat alles recht ligt.

Then I use pins to baste, lots of pins. Pins, pins, pins and more pins.

Daarna gebruik ik spelden om te rijgen. Spelden, spelden, spelden  en nog spelden.

I noticed the reflection of the quilt in the light fixture. Doesn't that look good?

Ik zag plots de reflectie van de quilt in de lichtarmatuur. Ziet dat er niet goed uit?

Next step: quilting. I wanted to finish this quilt during the Easter holidays, but as usual decided to hand quilt with perle cotton again. I can't help it, I love a quilt quilted with perle cotton.

Volgende stap: quilten. Het oorspronkelijke plan was om deze quilt af te werken tijdens de Paasvakantie, maar zoals gewoonlijk besliste ik om met de hand te quilten met coton perlé. Het is sterker dan mezelf, ik ben gek op handgequilte dekens met coton perlé.
