A Pacman block - Een Pacman blok

Sunday was sewing day today. Almost the whole day was spent making the Baby carriage flower block (according to my husband it looks more like a Pacman-block), a time-consuming block for the Green Tea quilt project. Not only are there many small pieces in this block, there are also quite some curves and finally, the cherry on the cake, appliqué leaves.

Zondag was naaidag vandaag. Bijna de hele dag werd besteed aan het maken van een ander bloemenblok voor de Green Tea quilt. Volgens de beschrijving een "Baby Carriage Flower block", volgens de wederhelft eerder een Pacman-blok. Het was een vrij tijdrovend blok. Niet alleen waren er veel kleine stukjes, er was ook behoorlijk wat bochtenwerk en, als kers op de taart, appliqué bladeren.

I enjoyed every minute of working on the block, probably because it was one of those lucky days without too many drawbacks. Only once had I to unpick stitches and start over again. And so the block was finished in time to take pictures outside, in daylight.

Ik genoot van elke minuut, waarschijnlijk omdat het één van die dagen was waar ik het geluk had dat alles mooi in de plooi viel. Maar één keer moest ik naden lospeuteren en opnieuw beginnen. En dus was het blok klaar in de loop van de namiddag, ruim op tijd om er nog in daglicht foto's van te maken.

During the past week, I made two more orange peel blocks, to add to the two already finished last weekend.I added the filler blocks on top, underneath and between them, so that their size is the same as that of the Baby Carriage flower block.

Afgelopen week maakte ik nog twee bijkomende appelsienenschillenblokken (hoe heet dat in het Nederlands?). Ik voegde wat vulsel toe boven, onder en in het midden, zodat de maat overeenkomt met dat van het Baby Carriage Flower blok.

There is one more block to be made for this section of the quilt, and after that some filler blocks have to be added before everything of section 4 can be pieced together, but it's looking promising!

Voor dit deel van de quilt moet nog één blok gemaakt worden en wat opvulblokken bijgevoegd links en rechts vooraleer het ganse deel 4 kan samen genaaid worden, maar het ziet er in elk geval veelbelovend uit!

Orange peel blocks

Appliqué, appliqué, appliqué. That's all there seems to be left on this quilt. Seven orange peel blocks are needed, so I started on them today. As I wasn't really happy with the result of my previous appliqué block, I used a different method for these ones. Thank you Lotje for telling me how to do this! (And you can find a tutorial for this method on this website)

Appliqué, appliqué, appliqué. Dat lijkt wel alles wat er nog te doen valt voor deze quilt. Zeven gelijkaardige blokken moeten gemaakt worden, daar ben ik vandaag aan begonnen. Ik was niet echt gelukkig met het resultaat van mijn vorige appliqué blok, dus probeer ik nu een andere methode, met dank aan Lotje om me te vertellen hoe dat precies in zijn werk gaat! (een tutorial voor deze methode vind je op deze website)

It does look a bit better, but the downside to it is that you end up using three layers of fabric instead of just two, so it does feel al bit stiffer. To remedy this, I used the finest fabric I could find for the backing of the orange peels. 

Het resultaat ziet er inderdaad wat netter uit, maar het nadeel is dat je eindigt met drie lagen stof in plaats van de gebruikelijke twee, waardoor het wat stijver aanvoelt. om dat wat te verhelpen, gebruikte ik de dunste doek die ik kon vinden voor de achterkant van de appliqué vormen.

There was only enough time to finish two of the blocks, so these are blocks 33 and 34, 14 more to go. This sounds as if the quilttop is almost done, but when I placed all my blocks in my "design wall", some spots still looked quite empty...

Er was maar genoeg tijd om twee blokken volledig af te werken, dat zijn dus de blokken 33 en 34, 14 te gaan. Dat klinkt wel alsof de quilt stilaan zijn voltooiing nadert, maar toen ik alle blokken op hun juiste plaats ophing, waren sommige plekken nog wel heel erg leeg...

Hello 2014!

Happy New Year everyone! May this year bring you all the love and happiness you desire. And enough time to do some sewing, wouldn't that be nice.

Gelukkig Nieuwjaar voor iedereen, en alle liefde en geluk die je je maar kan wensen! En ook genoeg tijd om wat te naaien, zou dat niet fijn zijn.

As this is the time to make some resolutions for the coming year, my first resolution would be to finish the Green Tea and Sweet Beans quilttop that I started in March 2013. Today, I added some filler blocks to finish the first complete section of the quilttop. And that looks like this:

Vermits het de tijd van het jaar is dat er goede voornemens worden gemaakt, neem ik me voor om in de eerste plaats de Green Tea and Sweet Beans quilttop af te werken, waar ik aan begon in maart 2013. Vandaag heb ik een paar opvulblokken gemaakt zodat ik het eerste stuk van de quilttop heb kunnen afwerken. En dat ziet er zo uit:

Next, I really have to finish the quiltbee quilttop. I started on the borders, but there's still a lot of work to be done before the quilttop will look the way I want it.

 Daarna moet ik echt de quiltbee quilttop afwerken. Ik ben begonnen aan de zijkanten, maar er is nog heel wat werk aan vooraleer de top eruit zal zien zoals ik wil.

Some quilting on already finished quilttops would also be welcome, especially on these two tops.

Afgewerkte quilttops quilten zou ook geen slecht idee zijn, vooral deze twee.

And then there are so many projects that I started these past years and would love to spend more time on, especially the winding ways quilt, which is already half done.

En dan zijn er natuurlijk de vele projecten waar ik de laatste jaren aan begon en waar ik graag meer tijd aan zou besteden, in de eerste plaats aan de winding ways quilt, die al half klaar is.

Finishing all these projects is probably more than I could hope for. On top of that, I would really really like to make a dress this year. As usual, there won't be enough days in the year to do it all!

Het is waarschijnlijk niet realistisch al deze projecten af te werken in 2014. En ik wil ook nog eens echt echt een kleed maken dit jaar. 1 januari zijn we nu, en ik heb al het idee dat er niet genoeg dagen in het jaar zullen zijn!

Some appliqué - Een beetje appliqué

The Green Tea quilt has a lot of appliqué blocks and apart from two of them, I managed to happily ignore them all until now. But now I'm stuck. Ignoring is no longer an option. If I want to finish this quilt, I'll have to face these blocks. It's time to grasp the nettle. So I decided to start with a time-consuming block; the clam shells.

In de Green tea quilt zitten behoorlijk wat appliqué blokken, en buiten twee daarvan heb ik die tot nu toe allemaal vrolijk genegeerd. Maar nu zit ik vast. Negeren kan niet meer. Als ik de quilt wil afwerken, dan zal het er van moeten komen. En dus wordt de koe bij de horens gepakt.Vermits ik nog in het bezit ben van frisse moed, koos ik maar dadelijk voor een arbeidsintensief blok: de schelpen. 

After quite some tinkering and fiddling I managed to position the top row of clam shells more or less in a straight line.  The difficult part turned out to be not the appliqué (although there is clearly room for improvement in that area too), but the positioning of the clam shells. The result is acceptable, but the last row is a bit higgleddy-piggledy. I convinced myself it's all part of the charm of this quilt.

Na veel gefriemel en gepruts kreeg ik de vier bovenste schelpen naast elkaar geplaatst. Het moeilijke bleek niet de appliqué zelf te zijn (alhoewel die duidelijk beter zou kunnen), maar het mooi gelijk plaatsen van de schelpen. Uiteindelijk kreeg ik een  aanvaardbaar resultaat, maar de laatste rij staat wel behoorlijk schots en scheef. We zullen maar denken dat dat bijdraagt tot de charme van de quilt.

There was time left for a second appliqué block, and I chose one of the igloo-blocks, copying the original colour scheme.

Er was nog tijd voor een tweede appliqué blok, en daarvoor koos ik één van beide iglo-blokken, helemaal volgens het kleurenschema van het origineel.

Now that this igloo-block is also finished, I can stitch together one section of the four sections of the quilt. All I need to add are some filler blocks, I'll do that tomorrow. Right now other fabrics are waiting to get some attention, ie. a huge pile of laundry...

Nu dat iglo-blok klaar is, kan ik één deel van de vier delen van de quilt helemaal afwerken, er ontbreken enkel wat opvulblokjes in het midden en daar ga ik me morgen mee bezig houden. Nu wachten andere stoffen op me, meer bepaald een grote berg strijk...

What? December 27??

If you have any idea where these past three weeks have gone, please let me know. Last time I checked, December had just started. And these past days were the first of this month there was time to do some sewing.

Als er iemand weet waar de afgelopen drie weken naartoe zijn, dan mag die het komen zeggen. De laatste keer dat ik op een kalender keek, was het nog maar begin december. En de afgelopen dagen waren de eerste van de maand met wat tijd om te naaien.

I'm still happily working on the Green Tea quilt blocks. Progress is slow, but the good news is that more than half of the blocks are done. The bad news is that almost all of the appliqué ones still have to be made. And me and appliqué, we're not good friends. I prefer using my sewing machine.

Ik werk nog altijd goedgemutst aan de Green tea quiltblokken. Het gaat langzaam vooruit, maar het goede nieuws is dat meer dan de helft van de blokken af zijn. Het slechte nieuws is dat de resterende blokken bijna allemaal appliqué zijn. En ik en appliqué, wij zijn geen goede vriendjes. Geef mij maar de naaimachine.

And so this block was completely machine stitched. Not that that was any faster then doing it all by hand because I had to use a thousand pins to keep those curves under control, but I still prefer this method.

Ook dit blok is volledig machinaal in elkaar gezet. Niet dat dat sneller gaat dan met de hand, want ik heb wel duizend spelden gebruikt om de bochten onder controle te houden, maar toch doe ik het liever zo.

The center of the block is a beauty and so is the fabric for the big triangles, but in hindsight I should have chosen a different colour for the middle leaves. It's a bit too orange-y now I think.

Het middengedeelte is echt prachtig en ook de stof aan de zijkant is mooi, maar achteraf bekeken had ik een andere kleur moeten kiezen voor de middelste bloemblaadjes. Nu geeft het wel een heel oranje indruk allemaal samen.

Work on the next block has already started. It's an appliqué one, the clam shells. I finished half of it by the end of the day, so I hope to have it finished by the end of the weekend.

Het volgende blok wordt er eentje met appliqué, vroeg of laat moest het er van komen. Tegen het einde van de namiddag was het half af, dus ik hoop dat het tegen het einde van het weekend helemaal achter de rug is.

This morning was the last morning to participate in the givaway, so once the clock showed 11.00 o'clock, I printed all the comments, made individual cuts, folded everyone of them and put them all together in a bowl.

Vanmorgen was de laatste dag om mee te doen aan de giveaway, dus eenmaal 11.00 uur voorbij, printte ik alle commentaren, sneed ze in individuele stukjes, plooide ze allemaal toe en legde ze in een kom.

Then I had to wait for my son to come down from his room (exams are coming closer, so even Sundays are spent learning now), since the innocent hand I was planning to use is attached to his body.

Daarna moest ik wachten op mijn zoon, die op zijn kamer zat te studeren (de examens komen dichterbij, dus zelfs op zondag moet er nu gewerkt worden), want de onschuldige hand die zou gebruikt worden hang vast aan zijn lichaam.

Sinterklaas!

It's not often that I write about anything else than fabric and quilts, but this is a very special evening for children in the low countries: Sinterklaas is coming!

Sinterklaas is a very old and venerable saint, who brings presents once a year to all the children who have been good. He lives in Spain and arrives by boat in Antwerp. It's a really big thing here. This year, more than 10.000 people welcomed him and his arrival was broadcast live on television.

Children have to put something in the chimney to welcome Sinterklaas, and that's exactly what my kids did this evening: a shoe, a letter, a Westmalle trappist beer for Sinterklaas, a coca zero for Zwarte Piet and a carrot for his horse Slecht Weer Vandaag ("Bad weather today").

On the night of December 5, Sinterklaas climbs the rooftops with his helper Zwarte Piet and his horse Slecht Weer Vandaag to drop the presents through the chimneys.

When I came down just a minute ago, Sinterklaas had already brought the presents. The beer and coca cola were gone, as was the carrot: the ultimate proof the Sint was here! 

By the way: don't tell Sinterklaas that my daughter is 22 and my son 20. After all, they have been good this past year and love celebrating Sinterklaas :-)

Sewing again - Weer achter de stikmachine

These past weekends were so busy that there was no time to sit behind my sewing machine. But today, there  was some spare time to relax and the Green Tea quilt is ideal to keep you busy for a couple of hours. I chose the simple pinwheel blocks, of which 9 are needed to use left and right as filler blocks in the quilt. You only see 4 of them on the picture, because the sun already sets so early that I had to run outside in the middle of the afternoon to make a picture using the last light of the day. I managed to finish 8 out of 9 blocks and finally chose a background fabric for the big block after hesitating for a couple of months.

De afgelopen weekends waren telkens zo druk dat er geen tijd was voor de stikmachine. Gelukkig was er dit weekend wel wat tijd om een paar uurtjes te ontspannen en een paar blokken van de Green Tea quilt zijn ideaal om je even zoet te houden. Ik koos voor een simpel windmolenblok, maar moet er zo wel 9 maken, die links en rechts in de quilt gebruikt worden. Op de foto zie je er maar vier, want het is nu al zo vroeg donker dat ik midden in de namiddag naar beneden gerend ben om snel nog een foto te kunnen maken met daglicht. Ik slaagde er in 8 van de 9 blokken te maken. Ook het grote blok, waar ik zo getwijfeld heb over de achtergrondstof, werd eindelijk voltooid.

Next week will be, once again, very busy. If I'm very lucky, I'll manage to finish the last pinwheel block. Once finished, these are blocks 21 to 29, 19 more to go.

Volgende week wordt, nog maar eens, heel druk. Als ik veel geluk heb, geraakt ook het negende windmolenblok af in de loop van de week. Eenmaal af, zijn dit blokken 21 tot 29, nog 19 te gaan.
