Red and White quilt (Part IV)

Some days ago, the fabric needed to make the border for the red and white quilt arrived in my mailbox (I previously wrote about this quilt here, here and here). I had to find it on the internet because it was sold out in the shop where I bought a piece earlier. But after some searching I found it online and so was able to finish this quilt.

Een paar dagen geleden kwam de stof die ik bestelde voor de rand van de rood en witte quilt aan (vroegere blogposts over deze quilt vind je hier, hier en hier). Ik moest ernaar zoeken op het internet want in de winkel waar ik eerder een stuk kocht, was het uitverkocht. Gelukkig vond ik het nog online en kon zo de quilt afwerken.

I used the lighter red fabric for the border, but added some red flower fabric in the middle and on the corners to complete the square pattern.

Ik gebruikte de lichtere rode stof voor de boord, maar bracht toch nog enkele stukken rode bloemenstof aan in het midden en aan de randen om het patroon van het vierkant te benadrukken.

It finished at a generous 200cm x 200cm (79" x 79"). I did intend to hand quilt it but am doubting that now because of the size of the quilt. Maybe I should send it to a professional quilter instead? We'll see, I'll think about it.

De afmeting is 200cm x 200cm. Eigenlijk was ik van plan deze quilt met de hand te quilten, maar nu twijfel ik omwille van de grootte van de quilt. Misschien zou het beter zijn een professionele quilter in te schakelen? Ik zie wel, ik zal er nog een paar nachtjes over slapen.

Blogger's Quilt Festival Fall 2013

The quilt I'm entering in the throw category was finished only a week ago, just in time for the Blogger's Quilt Festival. I call it the new vintage quilt.

I have previously written about this quilt here.

I loved making the top because I had to make my own template, based on the picture of the original vintage quilt. Working out the pattern took my mathematically challenged brain some time, but it was very rewarding to finally figure it out.

The pattern is not simple or straightforward, as it involves not only many curves but also many Y-seams. Every block was machine-pieced. If I remember correctly (it has been almost 2 years since I made the top), making the blocks and piecing the top took me a whole week.

When piecing the top together, it turned out to be nearly impossible to make all the seams match. I simply gave up after a while and concentrated on making only the white strips match, thinking these were the most important ones.

The top was handquilted with perle cotton. I love doing that because it adds a wonderful softness to a quilt. It finished at about 150 cm x 180 cm (59" x 71").

New vintage quilt

After more than 2 months, the quilting on the new vintage quilt is done. With the help of my daughter, I chose the fabric for the binding and started sewing it on.

Na meer dan twee maanden is het quilten van de new vintage quilt helemaal af. En met wat hulp van mijn dochter koos ik de stof voor de bied en zette me aan het naaien.

Unfortunately, by the time the binding was finished, it was too dark to take pictures, so I'll have to wait till next weekend to do that.

Jammer genoeg was het al donker buiten wanneer de quilt af was, dus voor goede foto's buiten zal ik tot volgend weekend moeten wachten.

National Patchwork Happening 2013 (Part II)

As promised a second selection of quilts on show at the National Patchwork Happening in Enghien, Belgium last weekend.

Zoals beloofd een tweede selectie van de quilts die getoond werden op de Nationale Patchwork Happeling in Edingen dit jaar.

Lets start with this one, made after Sarah Fielkes design. A more classic interpretation of the design, but beautifully executed.
Eerst deze, gemaakt naar een model van Sarah Fielke. Een klassiekere interpretatie van het model, maar prachtig uitgevoerd.

This one looked so much better in real life. It's a big quilt, some 2m x 3m, and the hexagons were made using a Japanese folding technique that I've never heard of.
Deze was veel mooier in het echt. Het is een grote quilt, ongeveer 2m x 3m en de zeshoeken waren gemaakt met een Japanse vouwtechniek waar ik nog nooit van gehoord heb.

All these quilts were a joy to look at, and made me realize once again how many talented persons there are. It also made me think that it would be a good idea to spend more time on less quilts. Quality, not quantity is important, but this is not always easy to remember in a time where you're almost expected to show a new quilt on your blog every week...

Het was een waar plezier all deze quilts van nabij te kunnen bewonderen en deed me nogmaals beseffen hoeveel getalenteerde mensen er rondlopen. Het zette me ook aan het denken dat het een goed idee zou zijn meer tijd te besteden aan minder quilts. Kwaliteit en niet kwantiteit is het belangrijkste, maar het is niet altijd makkelijk je daar aan te houden in een tijd waar bijna verwacht wordt dat je elke week een nieuwe quilt op je blog voorstelt...

National Patchwork Happening 2013 (Part I)

The National happening had many great quilts on show this year. So many in fact, that I couldn't photograph them all, but made a very subjective selection. I'll spread the pcitures over two blogposts to prevent an indigestion.

Wat een prachtige tentoonstelling was het dit jaar! Er waren tientallen geweldige quilts. Ik kon ze niet allemaal fotograferen, maar heb een zeer subjectieve selectie gemaakt die ik graag zal tonen. De vele foto's worden gespreid over twee blogposts om een indigestie te voorkomen.

Red and White (part III) - Rood en Wit (deel III)

It took longer than I thought but the red and white quilttop is almost finished.

Het heeft langer geduurd dan gedacht, maar vandaag was het dan zover: de rood en witte quilttop nadert zijn voltooiing.

Almost, because originally I wanted to add an extra border, as you can see on my pattern. I tried on one side, using the flower fabrics, but wasn't crazy about it. I'll give it another try with the other red fabric, but I only have a couple of inches left of that, so I'll have to go to the shop first. And I don't know when I'll be able to do that.

Nadert, want eigenlijk was ik van plan om er nog een boord aan toe te voegen, zoals hier op de tekening. Ik heb het aan één kant geprobeerd met de rode bloemenstof, en dat viel wat tegen. Ik ga het nog eens proberen met de andere rode stof, maar daarvoor moet ik eerst in de winkel geraken. En wanneer dat zal lukken, dat weet ik niet.

And besides, is a second border really necessary?  As you can see, I already added a first "border", continuing the block pattern. And the quilttop is already quite large (66" x 66") and the extra border would mean an extra 12".

En is het wel nodig, die tweede boord? Zoals je kan zien heb ik de tekening van de blokken al verlengd in een eerste "boord", waarbij het blokpatroon verlengd werd. En de quilttop is ook nu in elk geval al behoorlijk groot (175 cm x 175 cm) en die extra boord zou nog eens 30 cm erbij betekenen.

This is a picture of the cover of the book where I found the Japanese blocks. Idon't know if it's still for sale in shops, but I'm pretty sure you can find used copies on the internet.

Ter info nog even een foto van het boek waar ik de Japanse blokken uit haalde. Ik weet niet of het nog in de winkel verkrijgbaar is, maar tweedehands op het internet zeker wel.

It's my intention to quilt this top extensively and I even bought a book with that in mind: Infinite Feathers by Anita Shackelford. I also bought her quilting template. A bunch of over the top feathers, I think it'll look great on this quilt.

Het is de bedoeling de rood en witte quilt uitgebreid te quilten, en daarvoor heb ik zelfs speciaal een boek gekocht: Infinite Feathers van Anita Shackelford. Ik kocht ook de bijhorende quilting template. Allemaal uitbundige veren op deze quilt, ik zie het al helemaal voor me.

But all that is not for the immediate future. The next couple of weeks will be spent finishing the new vintage quilt, so that means no sewing and lots of quilting. 

Maar dat is allemaal toekomstmuziek. De volgende weken ben ik van plan de nieuwe vintage quilt af te werken, dat wordt dus weinig stikken en veel quilten.

Red and White (part II) - Rood en Wit (deel II)

Using another Japanese block, I made a second test block for the Red and White quilt This time I used a new red fabric to give some depth to the block

Met een tweede Japans blok maakte ik een nieuw testblok voor de Rood en Witte quilt . Ik gebruikte een nieuwe rode stof om wat diepte aan de tekening te geven.

And this is the mosaic I made with both blocks. I'll make the quilt with 9 blocks and add a border. I'm looking forward to making these blocks and putting the quilt together.

En deze mozaïek maakte ik met beide blokken. Voor de quilt plan ik 9 blokken te gebruiken en een boord toe te voegen. Ik kijk er naar uit de blokken te maken en samen te zetten.

Red and white - Rood en wit

Some years ago, the American Folk Artt Museum in New York organised an red and white quilt exhibition. And although the pattern were ofte really simple, the quilts were stunning. You can see a lot of pictures in this Flickr-group. I stumbled on these pictures again last week and really wanted to try and make one myself.

Een jaar of twee geleden was er in het American Folk Art Museum in New York een tentoonstelling van rood en witte quilts. De meest prachtige quilts werden daar getoond, met vaak heel simpele patronen. Je kan veel foto's ervan zien in deze Flickr groep. Afgelopen week zag ik deze foto's weer en dat gaf natuurlijk zin om zelf aan de slag te gaan.

It wasn't difficult to choose the fabrics. I've had the red Liberty flowers in my stack for quite a while now and less is more with this quilt, so the selection of fabrics is very limited. I might even eliminate the darker fabric.

De stoffen waren snel gekozen. De rode Liberty bloemetjes liggen al lang in mijn vooraad en eenvoud siert bij zo'n quilt, dus de selectie is erg beperkt. Misschien vervang ik de donkerdere stof nog wel door een andere of verdwijnt die helemaal uit beeld. De bloemetjes hou ik zeker.

And then the search for a pattern started.  After looking in several books I found this traditional Japanese pattern.

En dan op zoek naar een patroon. Na veel geblader in verschillende boeken vond ik in een boek met Japanse patronen dit traditionele blok.

A sketch was made. With pencil, on paper. I really need to learn how to draw on a computer!

En dat werd dan uitgetekend op papier. Het is echt tijd dat ik leer tekenen met een computer!

Then a testblock was made.

Daarna werd een testblok gemaakt. 

After that, I made two mosaics to have an idea how the quilt would look. The all important question is now: which version looks best? This one, without the addition of sashing, or...

En dan maakte ik om enkele mozaïeken om een idee te krijgen van hoe het er in het groot zou uitzien. De hamvraag is nu: welke versie is het best? Deze, zonder toevoegingen rond het blok, of...
